Hard collisions of photons: plea for a common language

چکیده
An attempt is made to sort out ambiguities existing in the current usage of several basic concepts describing hard collisions of photons. It is argued that appropriate terminology is often a prerequisite for correct physics.

Partonic structure of γ ∗ L in hard collisions
Manifestation of QCD improved partonic structure of longitudinally polarized virtual photons in hard collisions is discussed. As an example, dijet production in ep collisions at HERA is investigated in detail.
متن کاملResolved γ ∗ L in hard collisions of virtual photons : QCD effects
The manifestations of QCD effects on quark and gluon distribution functions of longitudinally polarized virtual photons involved in hard collisions are investigated. It is shown that for moderate photon virtualities and in the kinematical region accessible at HERA and LEP these effects are sizable and significantly enhance theoretical predictions based on contributions of transversally polarize...
متن کاملDirect Photons in Heavy-Ion Collisions
A brief overview of direct-photon measurements in ultra-relativistic nucleus-nucleus collisions is given. The results for Pb+Pb collisions at √ sNN = 17.3 GeV and for Au+Au collisions at √ sNN = 200 GeV are compared to estimates of the direct-photon yield from hard scattering. Both results leave room for a significant thermal photon component. A description purely based on hard scattering proce...
متن کاملL in hard collisions of virtual photons
We explore the relevance of extending the concept of the structure to the longitudinally polarized virtual photon involved in hard collisions. We show that for moderate photon virtualities and in the kinematical region accessible in current experiments at HERA and LEP, the contributions of its longitudinal polarization to hard collisions are sizable and should be taken into account as part of t...
متن کاملPhoton Contribution to the “Super-hard” Pomeron
It is shown that direct photons provide a leading twist mechanism for diffractive jet production in which the jets carry away all of the momentum lost by the proton. Two-photon processes are thus expected to asymptotically dominate “super-hard” pomeron events in ep collisions. We report the expected rates from these events for recent ZEUS and H1 data cuts. We also estimate the direct photon con...
